Evening Song

It's the time of year when evening comes to us again.
Light lingers just a little longer, not as eager to hide from the dark.
The winds of the afternoon quiet, and warmth hovers like a soft blanket before night's chill sets in.
The barn cats fill their bellies then take their time finding the right spot to curl in.
The horses look up from their feed and search the horizon, watching for the lost herd running in the clouds.

Soon the desert will parch in the sun and we will seek the coolness of the night.
But tonight even the coyotes pause in the evening stillness before beginning their song.
